Rush Limbaugh is throwing his hefty media weight behind embattled Ariz. Gov. Jan Brewer with a bizarre argument over Arizona’s anti-gay bill that stands the notion of “bullying” on its head.
The bill, which would allow store owners to ban gay patrons on religious grounds, is awaiting the signature of Gov. Jan Brewer to become law.
Picking up a popular catch-phrase of the day, Limbaugh declared on his radio show that Brewer is being “bullied” into vetoing the measure to “advance the gay agenda.”
Of course, nothing could be further from the truth, but that doesn’t faze Limbaugh. The bill would be a huge setback for gays and lesbians. A gubernatorial veto would merely preserve the status quo. So how is that “advancing the gay agenda?”
Well, as Limbaugh advised radio listeners yesterday (Feb. 25), the “soap story-line” goes like this.
“Religious beliefs can’t be used to stop anything the left wants to impose, unless they’re Muslim religious beliefs and then we have to honor those,” he bellowed. “But any other religious beliefs are not permitted,” Limbaugh said.
“The left will not allow them. Now, the current thinking is that Gov. Brewer will probably veto the bill, which, you might think on the face of it will make her a hero with the news media and the rest of the left,” he continued.
“She’s being bullied by the homosexual lobby in Arizona and elsewhere,” he said. “She’s being bullied by the nationwide drive-by media, she’s being bullied by certain elements of corporate America in order to advance the gay agenda.
“I guess in that circumstance bullying is admirable. In fact, this kind of bullying is honorable,” he reasoned.
Meanwhile, legislators who backed the bill are finally starting to realize the consequences of their actions. Foremost, gays in Arizona spend billions of dollars each year on goods and services.
Arizona could also lose billions of dollars in lost economic activity from businesses that refuse to locate in the state.
