Nicole Kidman captures the essence of Grace Kelly in the film ‘Grace of Monaco.’

Nicole Kidman looks the part of Grace Kelly, better known in her later years as Princess Grace, in a new trailer for “Grace of Monaco,” a controversial film that has been both slammed and supported by the principality’s royal family.

The film also stars Frank Langella, Parker Posey, Derek Jacobi, Paz Vega, Roger Ashton-Griffiths, Milo Ventimiglia and Tim Roth as Kelly’s husband Prince Rainier III.

Kelly was the daughter of Jack Kelly, a Philadelphia construction magnate, who won three Olympic gold medals as a sculler and was wealthy in his own right.

Grace decided to pursue acting and her sophisticated beauty quickly paid off in Hollywood. She landed a number of film roles and an Academy Award nomination by the time she was 23.

But she retired from acting three years later to marry Monaco’s suave Prince.

They had three children together, Caroline, Albert and Stéphanie, but palace life proved to be far from a fairy tale. Kelly also longed to return to acting.

Her struggle to choose between two lives provides the dramatic backdrop for the film, which focuses on a period in her life in 1962.

At the time political tensions between Rainier and French President Charles de Gaulle were at an all-time high, adding extra pressure on their marriage.

Kelly died in 1982 at 52, after a Monaco car crash involving her and daughter Princess Stéphanie.

In January a year ago, Prince Albert II, the reining head of Monaco, and sisters Princess Caroline and Princess Stéphanie denounced the script. They claimed it needlessly glamorized their lives and was historically inaccurate.

Director Olivier Dahan rejected the changes and said the movie was not a biopic. Kidman called it a “character study,” examining Kelly’s “great humanity as well as her fears and weaknesses,” according to French magazine Le Figaro.
