Campbell was being interviewed today (Mar. 25) on Australia’s “The Morning Show,” when hosts Larry Emdur and Kylie Gillies brought up the subject.
“What do you think about Kim and Kanye’s U.S. Vogue, given that you have been on the Vogue cover countless times?” Gillies asked.
After a long, pregnant pause, fighting off a guffaw, Campbell, 43, who still looks fabulous, decided on a non-answer answer.
“I do not want to comment,” she said before bursting into laughter, which seemed like a pretty clear comment.
Unlike sycophantic U.S. celebrity show hosts, Gillies pressed for an answer. “Why?” she asked.
“Because I’m a fashion model and I’ve been working for 28 years. And when you get a Vogue cover, it’s a build in your career; it’s a stepping stone to achieve that,” she said. “I’m a fashion model, what more can I say?”
Still Gillies pressed on what clearly seemed to be the implication of Campbell’s remark: “So you think that Kim and Kanye haven’t earned the right to be on the cover of Vogue?”
“Those are your words, not mine. I’m being politically correct,” Campbell replied not budging an inch. (That’s a first for her!)
Vogue released the controversial cover last week, touching off a storm of criticism. Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour said it was solely the magazine’s decision to feature them.
For her part, Campbell has appeared on Vogue’s cover five times in her career and she’s obviously bucking to make it six.
