Goulding, 27, is no sugar-coated pop princess, a la Katy Perry.
She’s more in the mold of Stevie Nicks. Although her vocal range is associated with a soprano, she’s better known for her breathy tone and emotive delivery. Like Nicks, she has a distinctive voice that is all her own.
Goulding is mostly known in the United Kingdom, but is slowly building a following in the United States.
Demonstrating her staying power and growing popularity her second album, Halcyon, debuted in Oct. 2012 at No. 2 on the UK charts and reached No. 1 after 65 weeks. Talk about word-of-mouth marketing.
She has a powerful presence on stage as well, with her long, flowing blonde locks that reach to the middle of her back, her baby-doll good looks and her all-out singing style.
At the 2014 BRIT Awards, she won for best British female artist, capping a year when her record sales hit an estimated 4 million albums and 15 million singles worldwide.
Her musical influences are as varied as her talent. She says her music is a mix of R&B, electronica, heavy metal, folk, hip hop, pop and classical. She cites Beyoncé, Ani DiFranco, Imogen Heap, Björk, Joni Mitchell and Lauryn Hill as influences, according to reports.
