Williams traveled to Moscow to meet with the former National Security Agency employee. Branded a spy, he’s currently on the lam.
In a short clip of the interview released by NBC ahead of tonight’s interview at 10pm (Eastern), Snowden goes to some length to explain exactly who he is.
He’s a spy all right, he reveals. He says he worked for the United States overseas in clandestine roles for all the major intelligence agencies, from the CIA to the Defense Intelligence Agency.
But’s no James Bond. Snowden says he didn’t work with people or recruit agents. Instead, he managed computer systems, where the U.S. gets much of its intelligence information these days.
He took umbrage at descriptions that he was a “low level employee” and “hacker,” who didn’t know what he was getting into.
