Darkhorse, A Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder, which led the field with ten nominations, won for Best Musical at the American Theatre Wing’s 68th Annual Tony Awards last night (June 8).
One of the many sentimental favorites, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, won the Tony for Best Musical Revival, while its star Neil Patrick Harris won for Best Actor in a musical. The show was nominated eight times in all.
McDonald was up against two Broadway veterans, Tyne Daly, Mothers and Sons and Estelle Parsons, The Velocity of Autumn.
LaTanya Richardson Jackson, A Raisin in the Sun, and Cherry Jones, The Glass Menagerie were also nominated.
McDonald, who’s won Tonys in every acting category, portrayed down-and-out blues singer Billie Holiday, in Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill.
Jessie Mueller, was a surprise winner for Best Actress in a musical for her role in Beautiful: The Carole King Musical. She topped favorite Idina Menzel, If/Then, who received so much hype at the Oscars.
Mary Bridget Davis, A Night with Janice Joplin, Kelli O’Hara, The Bridges of Madison County, and Sutton Foster, Violet, were the other nominees.
A Raisin in the Sun was a surprise winner for Best Revival of a Play, topping favorite The Cripple of Inishmaan, starring Daniel Radcliffe. In one of this year’s major snubs, Radcliffe was not nominated.
The play also produced winners for Best Featured Actress, Sophie Okonedo, and Best Director, Kenny Leon.
A Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder, which The New York Times claimed was best known for “modest ticket sales, little-known stars and limited appeal to tourists” also yielded a Best Director, Musical award for Darko Tresnjak (his debut) and a Best Musical Score award for Robert L Freedman.
