“Mank,” an inscrutable film about the making of an inscrutable film, leads the Oscars with 10 nominations, which just goes to show, Hollywood loves to dote on itself.

This year also marks the first time two women have been nominated for Best Director in the same year: Emerald Fennell (“Promising Young Woman”) and Chloé Zhao (“Nomadland”).

Other nominees include Lee Isaac Chung (“Minari”), David Fincher (“Mank”) and Thomas Vinterberg (“Another Round”).

“Mank” focuses on Herman J. Mankiewicz, a celebrated Hollywood screen writer who never got full credit for penning the screenplay for “Citizen Kane,” arguably the best Hollywood film ever made.

The picture is in line for Best Picture, Best Director (Fincher), Best Actor (Gary Oldman) and Best Supporting Actress (Amanda Seyfried).

In technical awards, the film is also nominated for Production Design, Makeup and Hairstylisting and Costume Design as well as technical categories such as Cinematography, Sound and Score.

“Mank” is right out of the 1930s and so is the oldest male actor to ever receive an Academy Award nomination– Sir Anthony Hopkins. He’s up for Best Actor for his role in “The Father.”

Olivia Colman was nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the movie, which picked up six nods in all, including Best Picture,

Other best picture nominees include “Judas and the Black Messiah,” ‘”Minari,” “Nomadland,” “Sound of Metal,” ‘The Trial of the Chicago 7″ and “Promising Young Woman.”

“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” garnered five nominations, including a Best Actress nod for Viola Davis and Best Actor for the late Chadwick Boseman, who died last year after a secret battle with cancer.

Riz Ahmed (“Sound of Metal”) and Steven Yeun (“Minari”) round out nominees for Best Actor.

Andra Day (“The United States vs. Billie Holiday”) and Vanessa Kirby (“Pieces of a Woman”), Frances McDormand (“Nomadland”) and Carey Mulligan (“Promising Young Woman”) are best actress nominees.

The Academy Awards will take place on April 26 from different locations owing to the COVID-19 pandemic.
