Kristen Stewart is featured in one of her most dramatic roles yet in a new trailer for the upcoming film “Camp X-Ray.” Not since 2010 indie “Welcome to the Rileys” has she had the opportunity to enmesh herself in a lead role that doesn’t include vampires and witches.
Stewart, 24, plays a young woman who wants to escape her small-town existence and do something bigger. So she joins the U.S. Army.
Big mistake. She’s shipped off to Guantanamo Bay where the U.S. is holding some of the most dangerous terrorists in the world at a prison called “Camp X-Ray.”
She’s thrust into the nether world of asymmetrical warfare where the line between right and wrong is blurred by politics, cultural differences and moral ambiguity.
Caught between the threatening prisoners and her own brutish squad mates, she connects with a prisoner who claims he has been wrongly held and tarred forever by his association with the “GitMo.”
The relationship goes against her orders not to “let them get inside your head.” And Kristen’s character, Amy Cole, must sort out her feelings.
Kristen stars with Peyman Moaadi, John Carroll Lynch, Lane Garrison and Joseph Julian Soria.
The movie was screened at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, and received mixed reviews from the limited number of critics who saw the film.
Stewart’s performance escaped largely unscathed, but the movie has only scored an unfavorable 56 rating so far on rottentomatoes, which tracks movie reviews.
