Selena Gomez gets two brief looks in the new trailer for “Rudderless,” the Billy Crudup movie that features William H. Macy in his directorial debut. It’s a tragic, but ultimately uplifting drama about father and son.

The movie screened at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival to most solid reviews among the limited number of critics who saw it.

Felicity Huffman, Laurence Fishburne, Anton Yelchin and Ben Kweller also appear in the movie.

The film is about a hard-charging advertising executive and family man whose son, Josh, dies tragically while away at college.

Crudup’s character, Sam Manning, goes to pieces with grief and spirals downward in an alcoholic haze. He starts to turn around after he finds a box of his son’s songs and demo tapes that he never knew existed.

As a way to remember him, Sam learns to play the songs and finally gets up the courage to play one at a local bar. The song inspires another musician and he urges Sam to form a band at the local bar.

In the video, Gomez is featured in two scenes (don’t blink your eyes) as Kate Ann Lucas, the son’s girlfriend. She shown in a tearful scene at the funeral early on and a bit later in a street scene.

She really only has a supporting role in the picture, but it’s one of her first steps back into film-making. She put her music career on hiatus last year after cancelling her Australian shows and doing a brief stint in rehab.

The 22-year-old actress has the lead role in comedy “Behaving Badly,” with Nat Wolff. The movie was released Aug. 1.

Crudup gets most of the kudos for “Rudderless.” But surprisingly, trade rag Variety panned the movie, calling it “bland and formulaic” to watch.
