Hillary Swank and Emmy Rossum form an unusual bond in a new trailer for “You’re Not You,” a powerful film about a relationship between two women, one of whom is suffering from ALS.

Swank, an Academy Award winner, plays an accomplished pianist who is afflicted with ALS, also known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

The illness, which affects neurons in the brain, has no known cause or cure. Over time, individuals lose their motor skills until they eventually become paralyzed.

As Swank’s character, Kate, struggles with the disease, her husband, played by Josh Duhamel, is forced to start looking for a caregiver.

His wife insists on hiring “Bec,” an aimless college student, because she makes her feel like she’s not disabled.

The story is really about Kate’s struggle to maintain her dignity and humanity in the face of her debilitating illness. Along the way, Rossum’s character also finds meaning and direction in life.

Entertainment One Films U.S. acquired the North American distribution rights in April, according to Variety. The indie film is scheduled for release later this year.

In the trailer, both Swank and Rossum give powerful performances. Both could be headed for Oscar nominations.

Swank, 40, has won the Academy Award for Best Actress twice for her roles in 1999 film “Boys Don’t Cry” and 2004’s “Million Dollar Baby.” In the latter, she played a female boxer who suffers a brain injury and dies.

Rossum’s breakout role came in 2004’s “The Phantom of the Opera.” She won a Broadcast Film Critics Association Award for Best Young Performer.

She also won a National Board of Review Award for Best Breakthrough Performance by an Actress, the Saturn Award for Best Performance by a Younger Actor and was nominated for a Golden Globe.

The 27-year-old actress is also a singer songwriter. She released her debut album, Inside Out, in 2007.
