Amanda Bynes is back in New York City and reportedly acting bizarrely according to some tabloid reports. Others say she’s fine. After being diagnosed as schizophrenic, what exactly might be going on in her mind?

Bynes was arrested by a California Highway Patrol officer on Sept. 28, after her Mercedes was spotted sitting in the middle of an intersection on Van Nuys Blvd. She was charged with being under the influence of drugs.

After her release, she jumped on a plane for New York City on Friday (Oct. 3). She’s been seen around town since then, sparking widely varying tabloid reports.

On Sunday (Oct. 5), she was spotted riding a bike through the city. E! News citing an eyewitness, claimed she “appeared normal and stable.”

But gossip site TMZ characterized the ride as “haphazard,” claiming she “nearly took out a few pedestrians as she sloppily rode through a crosswalk.”

Could they both be right? It’s more than likely possible if she’s gone off her medicine.

A schizophrenic can be totally “normal” one moment and then start acting strangely the next, according to medical references.

The onset of schizophrenia typically occurs in young adulthood, according to Celebrity Health & Fitness, which has reported on the medical side of her illness.

Most women begin showing signs in their mid-20s, with undue or prolonged stress a possible trigger factor.

Recreational and prescription drugs can bring on, or worsen, symptoms. Bynes reportedly has been using marijuana heavily. A photo of a joint in a female’s hand appeared on her Twitter feed today (Oct. 6).

Delusions, hallucinations and disorganized speech and behavior are all classic signs of the mental affliction, which is now thought to be due to biochemical abnormalities in the brain.

The dysfunction involves the brain’s neurotransmitters, such as dopamine and glutamate. They typically provide for normal cognition and attention, according to Richard C. Deth, a professor of Pharmaceutical Science at Northeastern University.

Disorganized speech may surface in answers to questions that are partially or completely unrelated. Rarely, speech may include meaningless babble, sometimes known as a “word salad,” according to the famed Mayo Clinic.

Disorganized behavior ranges from childlike silliness to unpredictable agitation, according to the clinic. That could include resisting instructions, a complete lack of response or useless and excessive movement.

Suicidal thoughts and behavior are also common among people with schizophrenia, according to the clinic.

The flighty actress landed in a psychiatric hospital in July a year ago and reportedly underwent treatment for schizophrenia and a bipolar disorder.

Her hospitalization followed months of increasingly bizarre behavior, including Twitter rants, an obsession about her looks and episodes of acting out in public.

She finally began receiving treatment after traveling from New York City to California last summer. Her parents were able to place her under an involuntary “5150 hold” to prevent her from harming herself.

Bynes reportedly responded “quickly and dramatically,” after being placed on a a “cocktail” of drugs, according to gossip site TMZ.

She left the hospital just over a year ago in September and entered a rehab center. Amanda was released from there last December and placed in her parents’ care.

She looked happy and healthy after that and her mom even insisted she had “no mental illness whatsoever.”

Then, came her bust for driving under the alleged influence of drugs. Now, Bynes is on her own in New York City, out of the reach of her parents.

And, maybe a danger to herself.
