Shailene Woodley, whose character loses her virginity in her latest movie “White Bird in a Blizzard,” says in a new interview that teens are more likely to lose their virginity due to pressure from other girls and not from boys.

Woodley, 22, who grew up in Simi Valley, Calif, also said the experience for most girls is probably unsatisfying both physically and emotionally.

“I think a lot of people feel pressured into it — not by a man or a boy in particular, but because of comparing themselves to other girls in their school,” she told The Hollywood Reporter in an impromptu interview.

“So when they actually get the deed done, they don’t feel any sort of satisfaction because it wasn’t for themselves. It was for others in a way,” she said.

On average girls lose their virginity at the age of 17, according a 2005 survey by Durex, which makes condoms. Just under a third of people said that they first had sex when they were 16 or under.

Another 2007 survey found that both boys and girls feel pressured by their friends to lose their virginity, so Woodley’s remarks appear to be on target.

The same survey, by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, found that most girls considered the loss of their virginity “a negative and, in some cases, horrific” experience.”

“I do not personally think losing your virginity is a fun experience,” said Woodley. “It’s not glamorous — for some people, I think it is, but it wasn’t for a lot of people on this planet.”

For that reason, Shailene said she wanted to accurately portray the scene in her new movie where her character loses her virginity.

“I’ve lost my virginity four times onscreen — I’m a pro at it, apparently!” she told the magazine.
