The raucous evening, filled with celebrity embarrassments, exceeded even the loose atmosphere of the Golden Globes.
Stewart might be forgiven from losing her top during a key moment in the nationally televised awards, but Johnny Depp was over the top during his presentation.
The “Lone Ranger” star appeared drunk or high, maybe both, as he gave a speech, introducing talent manager Shep Gordon. Gordon was the subject of an award winning documentary produced by comedian Mike Myers.
“That’s the weirdest microphone I’ve ever seen. I’m not really good at this kind of thing,” Depp said. He at least got that right.
His speech was slurred and he cursed like a sailor as he rambled, at times, incoherently. CBS finally just cut him off.
This was the first time the Hollywood Film Awards have been televised. Considered one of the more dubious awards, it’s always taken a back seat –waaay back — to the Globes and the Oscars.
But award shows have been soaring in popularity on television, so CBS took a chance on airing the proceedings. It likely got far more than it bargained for.
The sponsoring organization has been a mystery wrapped in an enigma when it comes to choosing it’s honorees. It’s often been accused of playing footsie with major studios and has handed out awards in the past before a movie had even been released.
It selection process has been described as “vague,” at best, with the primary criteria being the winners’ promise to attend the ceremony, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Carlos de Abreu, a Mozambique-born entrepreneur and his wife, former “The Price Is Right” model Janice Pennington started the event in 1997 and now it looks like its ship has finally come in with CBS on board.
But what a night.
Stewart showed up in a bizarre outfit, wearing a a chain-mesh style sleeveless turtleneck crop on top over a strapless dress. As she bounced around at the podium, her dress top began slipping down.
But the chain mesh to prevented her from pulling it up as she presented an award to her “Still Alice” co-star Julianne Moore. She gamely soldiered on.
Jennifer Lopez bungled “How To Train Your Dragon 2” while presenting the animation award, turning it instead into a sexual Freudian slip. She said “How To Drain Your Dragon 2.”
Most of the stars seemed to be in on the joke. Chris Rock crowed sarcastically “Wow, do you feel the excitement in the room? All of my life I have dreamt about getting one of these.”
Still, the show drew a long line of A-list attendees, including Angelina Jolie. Apparently, television exposure counts as Hollywood awards season kicks into gear.
