But Hurd’s allegations may be the most damning yet.
While Cosby played America’s most lovable dad in front of the cameras, he was busy behind the scenes make advances, touching women inappropriately and in one case drugging an actress at his home, Hurd said.
Marty Singer’s Full Statement on Bill Cosby Accusations The new, never-before-heard claims from women who have come forward in the past two weeks with unsubstantiated, fantastical stories about things they say occurred 30, 40, or even 50 years ago have escalated far past the point of absurdity.
These brand new claims about alleged decades-old events are becoming increasingly ridiculous, and it is completely illogical that so many people would have said nothing, done nothing, and made no reports to law enforcement or asserted civil claims if they thought they had been assaulted over a span of so many years.
Lawsuits are filed against people in the public eye every day. There has never been a shortage of lawyers willing to represent people with claims against rich, powerful men, so it makes no sense that not one of these new women who just came forward for the first time now ever asserted a legal claim back at the time they allege they had been sexually assaulted.
This situation is an unprecedented example of the media’s breakneck rush to run stories without any corroboration or adherence to traditional journalistic standards. Over and over again, we have refuted these new unsubstantiated stories with documentary evidence, only to have a new uncorroborated story crop up out of the woodwork. When will it end?
It is long past time for this media vilification of Mr. Cosby to stop.
The actress, who is best known for her work on “Law & Order: SVU” and “Gossip Girl,” said she was a stand-in on the set of “The Cosby Show” when Cosby started acting inappropriately toward her.
His actions always came with the admonition, “Never tell anyone what we [do] together,” she said.
“Look, I wasn’t going to say anything, but I can’t believe some of the things I’ve been reading. so here is my personal experience,” she said.
“I did stand-in work on The Cosby show back in the day and yes, Bill Cosby was very inappropriate with me.”
Hurd said Cosby invited her to his house to “take a shower together,” but she begged off. Another colleague, however, took up the invitation.
“Turns out he was doing the same thing to her, almost by the numbers, but, she did go to his house and because I will not name her, and it is her story to tell, all I’ll say is she awoke, after being drugged, vomited, and then Cosby told her there’s a cab waiting for you outside.”
Meanwhile, Singer, who has a reputation for bluster and a hard-charging style, went on the attack.
“The new, never-before-heard claims from women who have come forward in the past two weeks with unsubstantiated, fantastical stories about things they say occurred 30, 40 or even 50 years ago have escalated past the point of absurdity,” he said in a statement.
He said the string of women coming forward is “becoming increasingly ridiculous.” He said it “is completely illogical that so many people would have said nothing, done nothing and made no reports to law enforcement or asserted civil claims.”
In fact, one woman did sue. Andrea Constand, 32, a former Temple University employee claimed Cosby drugged and sexually assaulted her in 2004. Her lawyers lined up 13 witnesses, who were willing to testify that they experience very similar assaults. The case was settled out of court.
Hollywood was also a different place when Cosby was filming his hit television show in the mid-1980s.
Raising a public outcry or suing in what basically involved “he-said, she-said” allegations involving a rich, powerful and popular Hollywood figure, could have been career-ending.
Today, the climate is much different and people are more open and willing to discuss sexual harassment in the workplace. An actress like Hurd is a credible witness as are most of the other women who have come forward.
And despite, the passage of time, there is no statute of limitations on rape. In the end, even someone as forceful as Singer may be shouting into a tornado.
