He was applauded when he talked the heckler down, and joked “you have to be careful about drinking around me” when a woman offered to get him a refreshment.
The commedian, 77, most talks about recollections and personal asides from his career at the shows. But until now, he’s avoided any mention of nearly two dozen complaints from women who say he drugged and molested them over the course of five decades.
A video going viral on YouTube (see below), Cosby confronts a man who can be heard yelling: “You are a rapist; get out of here!”
When the man persists, Cosby replies. “No, no, stop… stop it, stop it.”
That’s right, no clapping, that’s it; shhh, shhh,” Cosby tells the audience, “No clapping.”
Audience members, however, invariably applauded, while the man was ejected, according to local press reports.
More than 100 people protested outside, shouting “shame” and “rapist.”
From there, Cosby went on with his routine.
Three more women have come forward to join a lawsuit being filed by celebrity lawyer Gloria Allred. Although the statute of limitations has expired on all of the incidents, Cosby may have given the women an opening to sue.
By denying their claims and asserting that the women are lying, Allred said she is suing Cosby for defamation, which is an available legal option.
Claims against the comedian have sharply divided Hollywood.
Phylicia Rashad, the actress who played Clair to Cosby’s Cliff Huxtable on his hit sitcom, “The Cosby Show,” came to his defense. She said the accusations were aimed at “the destruction of a legacy.”
Before the allegations surfaced in force, Cosby was held in high esteem for his work in education, the success of his ground-breaking career and the impact of his show, which was the first to portray African-Americans as wealthy, educated upper-middleclass Americans.
The actor said in a statement that he just meant to be funny:
“One outburst but over 2,600 loyal, patient and courageous fans enjoyed the most wonderful medicine that exist for human-kind: laughter. “I thank you, the theatre staff (at Budweiser Gardens), the event organisers and the London, ON Community for your continued honour and support. I’m far from finished.”
