Marvel Studios has been minting blockbuster roles for actors and actresses in its Avengers and X-Men movies.
A-Listers like Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Natalie Portman, Hugh Jackman, Jennifer Lawrence and Gwyneth Paltrow among others have become franchise staples.
The blockbuster films have provided steady work and big paychecks, even if they are lightly regarded in Hollywood. None of 2014’s top-ten grossing films were nominated for a Best Picture Academy Award this year.
The high-profile movies have also boosted careers, just through visibility alone.
Stewart certainly has big-budget movie franchise experience both with “Twilight” and “Snow White and the Huntsman.”
In a rare move–for her–she even talked about her desire to get into the superhero game in a recent interview. She specifically singled out Marvel and DC Comics movies.
“I love watching those movies,” she told Yahoo moves. “I would love to show people that I can do more than just be ‘Kristen Stewart’ in a different movie, in a different circumstance.
“I’m sure I could get on board with Captain America, you know what I mean?… It would just have to be the right thing.”
Unfortunately, the female parts are mostly taken. But the new “X-men” movie seemed to have a part tailor-made for her–the telekinetic, fiery, mutant Jean Grey.
The character has been played in “X-Men” films since 2000 by Dutch actress Famke Janssen, who is now 50. In the new movie, “X-Men: Apocalypse,” due in 2916, Grey, aka Phoenix, will be younger.
Turner, a statuesque 5-feet, nine-inches tall, is 18. Stewart is six years older at 24, and a good four inches shorter at 5-feet, 5-inches tall. Still she is a good fit for role and has more experience than Turner.
And, she’d love to get a rock ’em, sock ’em part that plays off her natural athleticism, so amply demonstrated in the “Twilight: Breaking Dawn” movies.
But today, Director Bryan Singer announced that Tye Sheridan, Alexandra Shipp and Turner would be joining the cast. Sheridan will play Cyclops and Shipp will play Storm.
Turner has been playing Sansa Stark on HBO’s “Game of Thrones” for the past four seasons. It hasn’t exactly been an action-packed role. She’s basically played a helpless female.
It’s unknown whether Stewart made a play for the part, or was even considered. Still, it sound like what she is looking for.
Stewart, however, appears willing to be patient.
“I want to do big movies. You get to play with more stuff and there’s so much more at your disposal. You get to do it on a larger scale, you get to connect with more people.
“I am all about that. I just want to do it for the right reasons,” she said.
“X-Men Apocalypse” is scheduled for a May 27, 2016 release date. Would Kristen have been right for the part?
