Their musical number also was part medley, touching on some of the musical acts that have also appeared on the show.
The name-dropping rap included acts like the Cone Heads, Gumby, Buck Wheat, Blues Brothers, Mr. Bill, The Californians, Wild and Crazy guys, the Ambiguously Gay Duo and “Dick in a Box,” of course.
Molly Shannon and Rachel Dratch made cameos in as some of their notable characters.
“Sadly, history has taught us that opening the show with a musical number leads to a sharp drop in ratings,” interjected Dratch as her character Debbie Downer.
“NBC doesn’t care about ratings,” Fallon replied.
“They really don’t,” said Timberlake.
The show featured many of the cast members going back to its inception in 1975. Bill Murray, Chevy Chase, Garrett Morris and Dan Ackroyd were among the original cast members to attend.
Musical guests included Paul Simon, NSYNC Miley Cyrus and Paul McCartney.
The show definitely had the feel of a homecoming or as opening monologue host Steve Martin said “a high school reunion.”
