Both films received seven nominations each along with “Neighbors,” the raunchy college frat house moving starring Seth Rogen, Zac Efron and Rose Byrne.
You can see why the Oscars somehow missed them. The MTV award categories are, shall we say, a little off the wall. They include “Best Scared as Shit Performance,” “Best Shirtless Performance,” “Best Fight,” Best Kiss” and “Best WTF Moment.”
Chris Pratt, who starred in the superhero Guardians movie, is a leading male contender. He was nominated for best male performance, best shirtless performance, best musical performance and best comedic performance.
“Fault in Our Stars” actors Woodley and Ansel Elgort were nominated for more traditional awards for best female and male performer, best kiss and best duo.
In another odd-ball pick, they’ll be going up against James Franco and Seth Rogen for best kiss in Sony’s controversial North Korean assassination comedy, “The Interview.”
“Neighbors,” actors Dave Franco and Efron were nominated for “best duo,” and Efron and Rogen were nominated for best fight and best musical moment.
In the all important movie of the year category, Oscar nominees “Boyhood,” “Whiplash,” “American Sniper,” and “Selma” made the cut. But Oscar winner “Birdman,” starring Michael Keaton and Emma Stone, was snubbed.
While “Birdman” misfired on Best picture it still scored nominations for Stone (best female performance) and Keaton and Edward Norton for best fight.
Added to the best movie list are “Guardians,” “Fault,” “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1” and Ben Affleck’s drama, “Gone Girl.”
Unlike the Oscars, which are picked by members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, the MTV movie award winners will be selected by fans.

This year, comedian Amy Schumer is hosting. The show will air live on MTV, Apr. 12.
