Sia, the Australian singer who put 12-year-old dancer Maddie Ziegler on the map in controversial music videos, sits for a rare chat in Interview magazine, and reveals why she stopped showing her face on stage. (Hint: Not because she’s ugly, she says)

Sia, 39, full-name Sia Furler, hasn’t shown her face during an interview or performance since 2013. And, that’s just the way she wants it.

“People say, ‘Enough of this s–t where she doesn’t show her face’ [but] I’m trying to do this differently, for serenity,” she tells Kristen Wiig, who conducts the interview for the magazine.

“And it’s a fun game for me as well,” she adds.

“I have nothing to lose. But of course I want to be loved. So when people say, ‘Show your face, you’re not ugly.’ I want to say, ‘I know. I’m not doing it because I think I’m ugly; I’m trying to have some control over my image. And I’m allowed to maintain some modicum of privacy.”

Sia Responds to Debate Over ‘Elastic Heart’ Video: Art? Or, Kiddie Porn?

Hiding your identity isn’t exactly something today’s pop stars would embrace. If anything, they’re overexposed. Even her record label was uncomfortable with the idea, she says.

“It was scary to them. It’s a testament to my management that they took the idea to them and said, ‘You’ve got to trust her.’

“RCA was the only one that was really willing to come to my party in the way that I wanted to work in the future. I had in my contract: no promo, no touring, no appearances in any music videos,” she explains.

But that hasn’t held her back. In fact, her trademark blonde wig has become a music icon in itself. And, her tremendous voice and song-writing talent, of course.

She’s the lyrical poet behind hits by Beyonce, Rihanna and Britney Spears. She has six studio albums of her own and is getting ready to release her seventh this year, titled This is Acting.

Her last album, 1000 Forms of Fear, was released last year and debuted at No. 1 on the pop albums chart in the United States. It also topped the charts in Australia and Canada.

The album contains her hits “Chandelier” and “Elastic Heart,” the two songs that Ziegler danced to in Sia-directed music videos.

Her video for “Elastic Heart” touched off an uproar because the pre-teen was paired with 28-year-old actor Shia LaBeouf in a cage dance that included moments of passion, intimacy and wild dancing. It caused an uproar because of its overtones of pedophilia.

Unfortunately, Wiig avoids asking about how the video was received or Sia’s reaction to the uproar.

Sia later appeared as a musical guest on “Saturday Night Live” and Wiig performed with Ziegler in a humorous take on the video.

For the upcoming April issue, Sia is photographed by Gregory Harris wearing designs by Alexander Wang, Viktor & Rolf Couture and Alexander McQueen. She was styled by Elin Svahn.
