Taylor Swift revealed heartbreaking news today (Apr. 9); her mother Andrea Finlay has cancer, and she’s only 57-years-old. Contracting the disease at a relatively young age could also signal potential complications for Taylor as well.

Swift, 25, broke the news on one of her social media accounts in a touching statement expressing her desire to keep her fans informed about her life.

“Hey guys, I’m writing to you with an update I wish I wasn’t giving you, but it’s important and I’m used to sharing important events in my life with you.

The “Shake it Off” singer explained that she asked her mom for Christmas this year to get a thorough physical to screen for any health issues, “just to ease some worries of mine,” even though there were no “red flags and she felt perfectly fine.

The results came back, “and I’m saddened to tell you that my mom has been diagnosed with cancer.”

Swift did not explain the type of cancer, but seemed to suggest that her mom had caught it early. Her mom was all for making the news public.

She added:

She wanted you to know because your parents may be too busy juggling everything they’ve got going on to go to the doctor, and maybe you reminding them to go get checked for cancer could possibly lead to an early diagnosis and an easier battle…Or peace of mind in knowing that they’re healthy and there’s nothing to worry about. She wanted you to know why she may not be at as many shows this tour. She’s got an important battle to fight.”

Her mom’s diagnosis should also send up red flags for Taylor, or any young person in a similar situation.

There are many kinds of cancer and many causes, from environmental to lifestyle factors like obesity and smoking. But in some families there is also a genetic predisposition to the often fatal disease, according to The American Cancer Society.

The chances of contracting breast, bowel or ovarian cancer are higher if you have close relatives who developed the condition. A red flag would be if two or more close relatives on the same side of the family develop the same type of cancer, according to the UK’s National Health Service.

Another red flag is the relative’s age. Younger than 40 is most definitely a warning sign, but the fact that Taylor’s mom is only 57 is also cause for concern.

Angelina Jolie is probably the most highest profile person who discovered that she possesses the gene mutation that makes cancer more likely. Her mom and two aunts all died from cancer and proved to have the gene mutation.

Jolie has had her breasts and ovaries removed to cut down her chances of contracting it because she has the gene, too. That’s a radical decision few women will ever have to face.

Only about 5 percent to 10 percent of all cancers result directly from gene defects inherited from a parent. But it’s still wise for Taylor to get screened as well and have regular checkups.
