A low carb ketogenic-style Paleo diet is the optimal diet for natural weight loss and good health, according to the documentary “The Perfect Human Diet.”
Investigative journalist CJ Hunt, executive producer of The Perfect Human Diet, said we can solve the obesity crisis by reverting to the original low-carb, high-fat ketogenic-style Paleo diet that helped humans evolve over millions of years.
“Scientifically, a diet emphasizing whole cuts of meat, wild plants and nuts, and eliminating grains, dairy, beans and potatoes is the perfect human diet,” Hunt told TheImproper. “As a species, we’ve gone way off-track.”
CJ drew his conclusions after speaking with anthropologists and evolutionary biology experts who conducted isotopic and elemental bone analyses on early human fossils to identify exactly what they ate.
These analyses reveal ancient humans ate primarily animal foods, such as large game meat (and obviously, no gluten or processed junk food).
Being fat and sickly is not natural, said Hunt. Humans were meant to be physically fit and robust for much of their lives and not be addled with chronic disease starting from midlife or earlier.
It is only when people started eating grains and industrialized junk food that the tsunami of obesity, diabetes and heart disease became the norm, said CJ, author of the companion book, The Perfect Human Diet.
“Since the introduction of grains and the proliferation of the current USDA food pyramid that pushes a diet high in grains and low in fat, our brains have been shrinking and our mental and emotional well-being is suffering the most,” said Hunt. “We are unable to handle everyday life emotionally and mentally.”
CJ said there’s a tendency to think ancient humans ate a primarily vegetarian diet, but long-term research does not bear this out.
Fitness expert and bestselling author Robb Wolf also appears in The Perfect Human Diet. Wolf said the gluten-free Paleo eating plan prevents disease, in addition to promoting natural weight loss.
“The Paleo diet is the healthiest way you can eat because it is the only nutritional approach that works with your genetics to help you stay lean, strong and energetic,” said Wolf, author of The Paleo Solution: The Original Human Diet.
In a dramatic scene (see video), Hunt and Professor Loren Cordain, founder of the Paleo Movement, walk along a 100-yard football field using it as a timeline for the evolution of modern humans.
Cordain said the first humans that are similar to modern man first appeared at the zero yard line. Over time, humans evolved into a hunter-gatherer species that survived on a diet of meat and wild plants.
Cordain, author of The Paleo Diet for Athletes, said grains, legumes and dairy did not even appear in our evolution until the last ½ yard line of the football field, until the advent of the agricultural revolution.
Processed junk food, now a staple of modern diets, wasn’t part of our diets until the past 100 years.
Hunt said the purpose of his documentary is to educate people about the importance of eating well, in the hopes that we can one day put an end to the scourges of obesity and degenerative disease.
To those who call the Paleo diet a trend, CJ Hunt says, “If this is a fad diet, then it’s a two-million-year-old fad.”
