Janet Jackson celebrated her 49th birthday last month with a surprise announcement of a new album and new tour. She was honored for her career at last night’s BET Awards.

Janet Jackson, who carved out a career in her own right beneath the shadow of brother, Michael Jackson, got a big send off for her career comeback last night at the BET Awards. She received the first ever Ultimate Icon: Music Dance Visual Award from television network.

Jackson, who tuned 49 last month announced a new tour and album on her birthday. It marked the end of a seven-year hiatus.

“This year: new music, new world tour, a new movement. I’ve been listening. Let’s keep the conversation going,” she said in a video announcing her comeback.

if there was any doubt about her ability to launch a comeback, she erased them last night by appearing to be in top shape. Janet went through a metamorphosis three years ago when she lost 60 pounds to regain her early figure. The 5-foot, four-inch tall singer once weighed 180 pounds.

Jackson married billionaire Wissam Al Mana in 2012. He’s a Qatari business magnate who owns 55 companies and is nine years her junior.

Ciara, Jason Derulo and Tinashe paid tribute to Jackson by performing some of her more famous routines to her hits “Rhythm Nation” and “All For You.”

Her appearance at the BET Awards was her first since marrying Al Mana.

“I’m so grateful for the support you’ve always given me, to my beautiful father and my beautiful mother,” Janet said in her acceptance speech. Parents Katherine and Joe Jackson, were in the audience.

Jackson also had this to say about her career and fans.

“It’s been a very long journey to this moment. My heart is so full. Thank you, God, for making everything, anything possible. I’m so grateful for the support You have always given me. Twenty-five years ago we created ‘Rhythm Nation,’ hoping the world would be a better place but today there is even more to be done. I’ve missed you so much, and I love you so much.

One of the most dominant performers of the 1980s and ’90s, Jackson hinted the name of her new album in a Tweet. #ConversationsInACafe.

Jackson’s Discipline, her 10th and most recent studio album, was released in 2008 on Island Records. It was a departure from her previous work. It delved into electro-pop, house and dance with R&B and hip hop tracks mixed in.

Although it debuted at No. 1 on U.S. album charts and was generally well received by critics, it was her least successful album. It sold about 446,000 copies domestically, still enough to qualify for gold status.

In contrast, her best selling album in the United States, 1989’s Janet Jackson’s Rhythm Nation 1814, sold 8.5 million copies. Worldwide, her best was 1993’s self-titled janet.. It sold 20 million copies.

Her new tour, titled “Unbreakable,” kicks off in Vancouver in August. No word yet on the release date for her album.
