The models, which include Rosie Huntington Whiteley, Lily Aldridge, Doutzen Kroes, Joanna Smalls, Bella Hadid and Anna Ewers, share one thing in common.
They are all comfortable in their own skin.
And who wouldn’t’ be if you look like them? But looks aren’t everything. They also must work hard to build and feed their fan base with a steady stream of photos and insights. That means becoming masters of social media.
“You put your image out there on social media every day and you share a little bit of yourself with the world,” says Whiteley, a British model who has recently broken into films. She has more than 3.4 million Instagram followers.
They are the first to admit they are slaves to their selfies as much as they are to the latest fashion trends. “I check my phone all night. It’s either underneath my pillow or within a foot my reach. It’s always near me,” explains Teigen, who is married to singer John Legend.
Social media has it’s advantages. It has turned models from mannequins into real-life, flesh-and blood-people, who have bad hair days just like everyone else.
In front of the camera, they become characters, whether its sultry seductresses, sinful sirens or unattainable goddesses. And often that means posing nude or semi-nude.
“I like to be comfortable in my own skin, so it’s cool to be able to do shoot like that,” says Hadid, who is the daughter of “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” star Yolanda Foster and sister of Gigi Hadid, also a model.
“The most uncomfortable I’ve ever been on set was having to model coats,” she said. “I actually am better in less clothing.”
“When you’re shooting nude, there’s always a sense of empowerment,” adds Huntington-Whiteley.
The magazine’s August issue focuses on pop culture social media. The models are featured in a spread titled “Privacy Settings.”
Teigen appears topless in Dolce & Gabbana lingerie with thigh-high Altuzarra boots. The other models also pose seductively for photographers Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott. Edward Enninful styled the shoot.
