One Direction, the popular UK boy band, is going on hiatus for at least a year, a move that will “orphan” their fifth album without tour support. The break may signal the end of the band much like The Jonas Brothers.

Band members Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Liam Payne and Niall Horan will finish promoting their fifth album.

Then they will go on break in March, according to reports out of the UK.

Industry sources tell IM that their fifth album is basically being “orphaned” without tour support.

Also, touring is where most bands make their money. Abandoning the tour suggests strong pressure from one or more of the remaining band members to call it quits.

The departure of ex-member Zyane Malik may have had more widespread implications that originally thought.

The move could be an effort to wide down the band by Simon Cowell, who created One Direction from rejects frin his hit UK music contestant show “X-Factor.”

After all, boy bands have a limited shelf-life, because, well, the boys grow up.

Malik left to launch a solo career, and other band members reportedly have been itching to do the same. Styles reportedly has both solo singing and movie offers on the table

One Direction would effectively cease to exist if another singer defects, even if a replacement were to be brought in, according to industry sources.

The decision to go on hiatus seems odd, because the band’s latest single “Drag Me Down,” is a hit.

One Direction released the song in July. It quickly became the most streamed tune on Spotify. The music site said it streamed nearly 5 million times globally the day of its release.

The band released the video last week. It’s been viewed nearly 20 million times since then, according to YouTube.

It’s the first off their upcoming fifth studio album. The video, as well as the song, are also the first since Malik quit.

The Jonas Brothers, Joe, Nick and Kevin, performed together as teens, but once the boys matured they went their own way at the height of their popularity.

Now, One Direction may be going out on top as well.
