Stories about the former “Twilight” stars have mostly been fabricated to exploit fans, the source said.
A familiar theme is a possible rekindling of their romance. They dated in real life through all five “Twilight Saga” films released from 2008 through 2012.
On screen, they fall in love and marry in one of the most-watched weddings in film history.
But in real life, it was not to be.
The relationship crashed and burned following Stewart’s 2012 cheating scandal with Director Rupert Sanders. The couple tried to reconcile, but split for good in May 2013.
Whatever emotional baggage remained from the breakup is gone now, said our source. “There’s no animosity, no bitterness,” the source said. “They’ve simply moved on with their lives.”
But many fans are so emotionally invested in their relationship, they can’t let go. Still others have broken into warring camps. They’re Rob haters or Kristen haters.
Either way, they’re still a ready audience for any story the tabloids choose to make up. And, they make up plenty.
Many of the fabricated stories can be traced to a handful of Web sites: HollywoodLife, Radaronline and The New York Post’s Page Six, domestically, and several UK tabloids.
GossipCop recently went to great lengths to debunk the latest fake report. It claimed Rob avoided going to the Venice Film Festival out of fear of bumping into Kristen, who was there.
But it came down to a simple matter of scheduling. Pattinson was in Belfast, Ireland filming his latest picture, “The Lost City Of Z.”
GossipCop noted that they both attended the Hollywood Film Awards last year without incident and without “bumping into each other.”
Even so, dozens of webloids copy-catted the Venice Film Festival story, which was widely propagated by Google.
Even when the stories are proven false, that just gets reported as another twist. The Post, for example, reported that Rob was just using his “The Lost City of Z” commitment as an excuse.
The Los Angeles Times noted that every action and reaction involving one or the other is somehow linked. A recent report, for example, that Rob and fiancee FKA Twigs had cooled their relationship was immediately linked to Stewart.
“They’re not trying to get back together and they’re not trying to avoid each other. None of these headlines are true,” says our source.
In the end, these stories only masquerade as “journalism.” They’re actually a form of “entertainment,” according to one tabloid editor.
The steady stream of “exclusives” from always anonymous sources are designed to tease, enthrall, entertain, and most of all, keep fans coming back for more.
But the truth is, there rarely is any truth.
