Morgan was traveling on the New Jersey Turnpike when his Mercedes van was slammed in the rear by a Walmart tractor-trailer.
He suffered a broken leg and femur, broken nose, several broken ribs and a traumatic brain injury. He spent more than a year convalescing, learning to walk and talk again.
Last night, he was called to the stage by host Andy Samberg to announce the final award of the evening, Outstanding Drama Series.
Morgan moved haltingly across the stage to the podium. But he was articulate and showed he still had his comedic timing.
“Thank you. Thank you so much. I miss you guys so much,” he said to an extended standing ovation.
“Last year Jimmy Kimmel sat on this stage and said, ‘Next year we’ll see you back here, Tracy Morgan.’ Well, Jimmy, thanks to my amazing doctors and the support of my beautiful new wife, I’m here, standing on my own two feet.
“Only recently I’ve started to feel like myself again, which means a whole lot of you women are gonna get pregnant at the after party,” he said.
Morgan’s friend and fellow comedian James McNair was killed in the crash.
Morgan, who was a regular on “Saturday Night Live,” and NBC comedy “30 Rock,” will make a return appearance on SNL next month.
