Robert Pattinson scoffs at his early days as a model, but he sizzles in his latest campaign for Dior Homme Eau For Men cologne. He evokes the look and feel of ’50s icon James Dean in a series of photos from his new ad shot on a wintry day in New York City.

Pattinson, 29, recently starred in “Life,” a movie about Dean and his encounter with Life magazine photographer Dennis Stock.

Stock photographed Dean in New York City in 1955 for a magazine feature. The haunting images came to symbolize youthful alienation and the rise of the Beat Generation.

In the movie, Pattinson played Stock, in what many critics considered a case of monumental miscasting. They thought he should have played Dean, because of his ability to evoke the same haunting visage. Instead the role went to little-known actor Dane DeHaan.

Both actors did credible jobs playing their characters, but the latest Dior images show just how powerfully Pattinson would have been as the ’50s acting legend.

The photos are from Pattinson’s latest Dior video by German director Peter Lindbergh, who is known for his black and white cinematic photography.

Pattinson looks moody and distracted just like Dean as he strolls city streets and stares wistfully off into the distance. He wears an overcoat white shirt and thin black tie favored by hipsters but also popular in the 1950s.
He’s described by the brand in a statement as a “streetwise prince with a disarming gaze. His urban look is irresistible and brings back the aura of a modern rebel.”

Not coincidentally one of Dean’s most famous movies was titled “Rebel Without a Cause.” He plays a disaffected teen at a new high school.

Pattinson decision to sign with the brand in 2013 came as somewhat of a shock. Rob, who began his career as a model, said he hated the work was glad “Twilight” made it possible to leave that world behind.

Rob began modeling at 12, but said work dried up after he lost his androgynous look. “When I first started I was quite tall and looked like a girl, so I got lots of jobs,” he recounted in an interview with New York magazine.

“Then, I guess, I became too much of a guy, so I never got any more jobs. I had the most unsuccessful modelling career,” he said.

He decided to sign with Dior, he told Elle France, “because I wanted to do something different for me… doing something that is quite mainstream but also edgy fit into where I want my life to go.”

According to various reports, Rob is making between $8 million and $12 million for his efforts.

In his first campaign for Dior, Rob appeared with French model and actress Camille Rowe, briefly sparking rumors of a romance.
