“Game of Thrones” has always had mystical elements to help thicken the plot as the Seven Kingdoms struggled to capture the Iron Throne. But Season 6 looks like it could take an even deeper plunge into the supernatural, according to the latest trailer for the upcoming season.

So many main characters have been killed off during the previous five seasons, the fantasy drama, set in the fictional lands Westeros and Essos, may have no where else to go plot-wise.

At the moment, the HBO show basically has three main supernatural storylines.

Melisandre, played by Carice van Houten, has been a major character in the second, third, fourth and fifth seasons.

She is priestess of the Lord of Light and was a close adviser to Stannis Baratheon, a pretender to the Iron Throne. Her magical powers featured prominently in Stannis’s rise and fall.

You may recall in Season 5, she forced him to burn at the stake his only daughter, Princess Shireen, in front of his army to insure his victory against the Boltons at Winterfel.

But Shireen’s screams of agony cause half of his men to desert and he was easily defeated. Although it appeared his life was ended by Brienne of Tarth (Gwendoline Christie), the scene was inconclusive and he may still return in Season 6.

Melisandre fled the battle and returned to Castle Black, where she is expected to still be a major player in the new season.

Meanwhile, Castle Black has hits own problems. It’s facing an attack by another supernatural power, the White Walkers.

White Walkers are essentially the living dead who have magical powers related to ice and cold. They ca freeze anything they touch, have superhuman strength and regenerate as soon as they are killed. The only thing that can stop them is dragon glass.

Season 5 ended with a group of Night’s Watch brothers, including Alliser and Olly, stabbing Lord Commander Jon Snow and leaving him for dead in the castle courtyard.

But did he really die? That question, too, wasn’t answered definitively. The show’s producers have since hinted that he survives.

Jon is the only one who really understands the threat posed by the White Walkers, which are likely to loom large in Season 6.

Another force to be reckoned with is Jaqen H’ghar (Tom Wlaschiha) of the Faceless Men of Bravos, a feared order of mysterious assassins with the ability to change their appearance at will.

Jaqen befriends Arya Stark and she eventually travels to Bravos to join the order. Jaqen agrees to train her, but she betrays him and assumes an identity to kill bitter enemy Ser Meryn.

In Season 5, Jaqen appears to take his own life to repay the Many-faced God for the Arya’s act, and Arya is blinded. Jaqen is also expected to play a major role in Season 6.

The new trailer depicts a scene from inside Jaqen’s House of Black and White. It shows the many faces of the dead on the wall; among them are several of the main characters who are dead, including Arya’s parents and oldest brother Robb, King Joffrey and Jon Snow.

And, some of those still alive, including Tyrion Lannister, Daenerys Targaryen and Arya. Their fate remains unknown. The trailer’s meaning, like so many elements of the show, is shrouded in mystery.
