Rihanna is undoubtedly the star of the latest “Star Trek Beyond” trailer, although she doesn’t appear on screen or in the cast. Instead, her power vocals are featured from the movie’s soundtrack. She premieres her new song “Sledgehammer” in the clip.

The movie will debut next month on a sad note. It’s one of Anton Yelchin’s last pictures before his untimely death Sunday (June 19).

Yelchin was pinned against an iron gate at the end of his driveway by his 4,900 pound Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV. He died from “blunt traumatic asphyxia.” The L.A. coroner ruled the death an accident.

Paramount last week cancelled a cast Q&A last week at the Cannes Lions Creativity Festival, out of respect for the 27-year-old actor, according to deadline.com.

Yelchin is best known for his Star Trek character Pavel Chekov, whom he’s played in all three movies in the most recent franchise reboot.

Tragedy aside, the latest clip features Chris Pine as Captain Kirk and Karl Urban as Dr. Leonard McCoy, aka “Bones.”

The situation is obviously serious. Kirk is suffering a bout of self-doubt and Bones is trying to talk him through it.

The scene includes the two at a bar (alcohol is still in fashion in the 23rd century…apparently). Scenes flash by as Kirk ruminates about why he joined Star Fleet. He also wonders whether he’s simply trying to live up to his father’s reputation.

It’s all a prelude to the USS Enterprise’s deepest and darkest mission yet. A strange force–the clip doesn’t say what–takes the starship by surprise. New alien lifeforms materialize. They’re not friendly.

“We were overwhelmed we’d certainly never seen before,” Kirk says in a voice over. I know this isn’t the last of my crew. But this is my last report as the captain of the Starship Enterprise.”

Kirk appears to eject in a safety pod. He watches out the window as the ship disintegrates outside. At this pivotal moment, Rihanna kicks things into high gear with her vocals.

As she supercharges the film, strange aliens pop up and the crew appears stranded on a hostile planet.

Simon Pegg, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana and John Cho also reprise their roles.

Newcomers Idris Elba joins the film as Krall, a ruthless alien commander; Sofia Boutella plays alien Jaylah.

The Justin Lin-directed film debuts July 22.
