Mark Hamill is enjoying a career comeback as he reprised his role as Luke Skywalker in Star Wars 7 and Stars Wars 8, and didn’t mind having to lose weight for the films.
“I went to training, and I lost all this weight,” Hamill told reporters at a Star Wars Celebration in London.
“I thought, ‘I must be doing something physical if they’re sending me to the gym twice a week and torturing me physically.”
While Mark’s 50-pound weight loss was hyped for months before Star Wars 7: The Force Awakens was released in theaters in December 2015, but fans were underwhelmed they only got to see Hamill for a few seconds at the end of the film.
Mark joked that all the hard work he had put into losing weight was barely noticed in Star Wars 7.
Hamill’s weight loss secrets were a strict low-calorie diet and twice-daily gym workouts, Celebrity Health Fitness reported.
Hamill and his co-star Carrie Fisher were both ordered by producers to lose weight to reprise their iconic roles as Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia.
Because both Mark and Carrie had gained a significant amount of weight since first starring in the Star Wars trilogy in the 1980s, producers made sure they had access to top-notch diet and exercise experts to slim down.
While Mark lost the weight good-naturedly, Fisher slammed film executives for pressuring her to lose weight.
“Nothing changes,” Fisher fumed. “I’m in a business where the only thing that matters is weight and appearance. That is so messed up.”
Meanwhile, Mark Hamill is looking forward to “Star Wars 8,” which premieres in December 2017. Not only will he appear on screen for more than five seconds, but he’ll finally be able to discuss the movie freely without violating the film’s strict secrecy code.
