Donald Trump drew a strong rebuke from the mother of Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens, for politicizing his 2012 death in Benghazi to attack Democratic Rival Hillary Clinton. “Chris would not have wanted his name or memory used in that connection,” she said.
Stevens’ mother, Mary F. Commanday, blasted Trump in a letter published Friday (July 22) in The New York Times.
She called Trump and the Republican Party “opportunistic and cynical” for abusing the memory of her son.
“I know for certain that Chris would not have wanted his name or memory used in that connection,” she wrote. “I hope that there will be an immediate and permanent stop to this opportunistic and cynical use by the campaign.”
Mary Commanday Letter to Editor
As Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens’s mother, I am writing to object to any mention of his name and death in Benghazi, Libya, by Donald Trump’s campaign and the Republican Party.I know for certain that Chris would not have wanted his name or memory used in that connection. I hope that there will be an immediate and permanent stop to this opportunistic and cynical use by the campaign.

Clinton was serving as Secretary of State in the Obama administration when the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya was attacked by an angry mob of radical Islamic terrorists on Sept. 11, 2012, as TheImproper has reported.
Stevens retreated to a safe room in the consulate but was overcome by smoke. He was rushed to a local hospital but died from internal bleeding caused by smoke inhalation.
Congressional Republicans launched a long-running and costly investigation into Clinton’s actions surrounding requests for help from the consulate, but found no wrong-doing on her part.
Commanday’s comments come on top of a statement by Stevens’ sister Anne Stevens. Last month, Anne Stevens told The New Yorker magazine that she doesn’t hold Clinton responsible for the attack.
“(To) use Chris’s death as a political point, is not appropriate,” she said.
Her admonition, however, hasn’t stopped Trump from politicizing Stevens’ death.
Also killed in the attack were State Department communications specialist Sean Smith and CIA security contractors Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty.
At the GOP convention, Smith’s mother Patricia Smith, blamed Clinton for her son’s death.
