Should Keira Knightley Play Princess Diana in Film? (vote!) 1UK actress Keira Knightley or possibly Scarlett Johansson have been mentioned to star in a movie based on the tragic life of Princess Diana, who was killed in a mysterious car crash in 1997.

UK film company Pathe has reportedly started work on the movie, but they have yet to land Keira, 25, as Diana, or Dame Helen Mirren, 65, as her mother, Frances Shand Kydd, according to London’s Daily Mail.

Diana’s sons, Princes William and Harry are expected to disapprove of the film, which is sure to be controversial.

Emotions still run deep about the Royal family’s treatment of the princess and the circumstances surrounding her death.

“There’s a buzz about this,” a source told the Mail. “Pathe also made ‘The Duchess,’ which starred Keira as Georgiana, the fifth Duchess of Devonshire – the great-great-great-great aunt of Diana – and controversially used an image of Diana to trail the movie.”

Pathe is also known for making “The Queen” with Mirren playing Queen Elizabeth.

The movie, which was critically acclaimed, focused on Queen Elizabeth and the controversy that surrounded her at the time of Diana’s death.

While not much is known about the movie, it is slated for release next year to on the Princess’s 50th birthday. The year also marks 30 years since Diana’s wedding to Prince Charles, which ended in divorce in July 1996.

The film will focus on Diana’s life, her marriage to Prince Charles, their separation and her death in a Paris car crash.

Diana, her lover Dodi Fayed, and the driver of the Mercedes-Benz W140, Henri Paul, were killed in the crash. Fayed’s bodyguard, Trevor Rees-Jones survived with serious injuries.

The crash remains controversial because Dodi’s father, Mohamed Al-Fayed, the wealthy owner of Herrod’s department store in London and other properties, believes Britain’s intelligence service was behind the crash.

The film company is counting on the picture being a big hit in the United States, where Diana is still adored, and the lives of her children are closely followed.

“It will be in the same vein as their movie The Queen and will detail the ups and downs of Diana’s marriage and the early lives of the Princes.’’
