Her appearance coincides with the release of her new album Glory.
Spears, at 34, is a sympathetic favorite among performers at the MVAs.
She’ll be joined by Future, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj and Ariana Grande,. Beyoncé is also rumored to be in the lineup, but her appearance is unconfirmed.
The 33rd awards show will be televised live from New York City’s Madison Square Garden in midtown Manhattan. Brit is scheduled to perform her hit new single with G-Eazy.
Spears’ return to the MTV VMA stage has special significance. Her 2007 VMA performance marked the nadir of her career.
She looked bloated and appeared disoriented and incoherent on stage. She missed words, came in late to the chorus and lost track of her song, “Gimme More,” while lip-syncing.
She was just coming off her divorce a month earlier to Kevin Federline, the father of her two children. That was followed by an epic meltdown.
She was committed to a psychiatric facility later that year. Her father James Spears and attorney Andrew Wallet were awarded permanent conservatorship over her, which remains in effect today.
She began her comeback in 2008 with the release of her sixth studio album, Circus. It was a critical and commercial success.
She followed up with her seventh studio album Femme Fatale. It also topped the charts.
The year 2013 was singular for her. She released her eighth studio album Britney Jean and began her five-year Las Vegas residency.
Check out her photos since then. Brit looks like she’s in the best shape ever.
