Donald Trump’s outrageous campaign lies and smears have become so numerous many pundits say the news media hasn’t been able to keep up. But GQ magazine’s liberal pundit Keith Olbermann details the most egregious statements in a new video. The list is long and sordid.
The 17-minute video, published by the magazine, details more than 170 instances, ranging from outright lies to character assassination.
“Every few generations we Americans are called upon to defend our country. To defend it not so much from foreign dictators, or war or terrorism, but from those here who have no commitment to progress, or democracy, or representative government,” he said.
“No commitment to anything, except their own out-of-control minds and the bottomless pits of their egos,” he added.
Olbermann, 57, best known for his long run as an MSNBC commentator and sports columnist, lumps Trump in with some of the most nefarious demagogues and political movements in U.S. history.
They include the likes of Sen. Joe McCarthy, who gave us the red scare of the 1950s, George Wallace, Father Coughlin, Jefferson Davis, Aaron Burr, the Know-Nothings, the Black-Listers and the America-Firsters.
“Now, our generation has its own. The most dangerous individual ever nominated by a major party for the highest office in this country. His base wants few details and fewer facts. They just want to burn it down and blame their failures on the ‘collective other,'” he said.
He called Trump their “demonic messiah.”
“We must stop him. It is not pleasant, it is not fair to have to do this, but it is our duty,” he said.
Olbermann said Trump’s lies and smears have been so numerous, they’ve become the new normal, allowing him to escape accountability for them.
“As we react to each outrage, our shock and revulsion has been refracted like light through a prism,” he explained. “Seen all at once, they and he are horrifying. And, you must see them all at once.”
