Bernie Sanders, never known to mince words, called out Donald Trump today for outright “bigotry” during Trump’s five-year campaign to discredit President Obama over baseless allegations about his birth.

Sanders ran a hard-fought campaign against Hillary Clinton for the Democratic nomination. He has since endorsed her for president.

Following his election in 2008, President Obama was the subject of vicious attacks by right-wing rumor mongers who spread racist conspiracies about his birthplace and his religion.

The same right-wing rumor mongers have been spreading baseless allegations about Clinton’s health.

Trump, more than anyone, legitimized those conspiracies. He became a leading advocate of the idea and went to great lengths, to no avail, to prove Obama was actually born in Africa and is a practicing Muslim.

Neither rumor is true, and Trump for the first time today admitted as much in a new interview.

He acknowledged that the president was born in the United Sates.

“President Barack Obama was born in the United States, period,” Trump said. “Now we all want to get back to making America strong and great again.”

In typical fashion he blamed rival Hillary Clinton for starting the controversy in 2008 when she ran against him in the Democratic primary. And, he took credit for resolving it. That assertion, of course, is false.

Sanders was asked on CNN to put Trump’s campaign against Obama in perspective.

“Look, this is pathetic,” Sanders said. “And this goes to the root of what Trump’s campaign is about. Let’s be clear: It’s about bigotry.”

He added:

“Let’s all remember, that a few years ago Donald Trump was the leader of the so-called ‘birther movement.’ What the birther movement was about was not being critical of Obama–this is a democracy we can criticize Obama–it was de-legitimizing the first African-American president in the history of our country. And, the reason for that was clear; there are racists in this country who could never accept the fact that we had a black president. And that’s what Trump was trying to do, de-legitimize him.

Sanders said Trump’s bigotry has also been used against Mexicans, Muslims and women. “It is not acceptable for a candidate for President of the United States.”
