Trump owned the “Miss Universe” pageant when Machado, representing Venezuela, won the title in 1996.
She told “Today’s” Natalie Morales that Trump bullied her when she gained weight following her pageant victory.
“All the time. That was really normal for him, in that moment,” she said.
The GOP presidential candidate ridiculed her with names like “Miss Piggy, Miss Housekeeping, Miss Eating Machine,” she added.
“You know, with 18 years old, when you are growing up, that was horrible for me,” said said. “My self-esteem (was) on the floor.” She said it took her years to overcome an eating disorder.
Machado said Trump’s temperament and misogynistic attitude toward women has not changed.
The former beauty queen was thrust into the national limelight during the Presidential debate between Trump and Democratic rival Hillary Clinton.
Clinton, who won the debate by a wide margin according to a CNN poll, brought up her name during a discussion of Trump’s treatment of women.
Machado is supporting Clinton in the election. She said she hopes her story will convince others to back the Democratic candidate.
In a Clinton campaign ad, Machado, who is Latina, says Trump “bears many grudges and harbors a deep racism.”
She said she is not being paid or compensated in any way for the ad.
When asked about the criticism on Fox & Friends after the debate, Trump continued to attack her.
“That person was a Miss Universe person and she was the worst we ever had, the worst. The absolute worst, she was impossible,” he said
