Donald Trump did his best to smear former Miss Universe Alicia Machado, but some of the worst allegations –that she’s a porn star with drug cartel connections–are false, according to fact-checking news outlets.

Trump’s obsession with Machado reinforced perceptions that he is vindictive, has an uncontrollable temper and is delusional about constant conspiracies against him.

Machado won the title in 1996 while Trump owned the pageant. She was thrust into the limelight after Democratic rival Hillary Clinton mentioned her during last Monday’s presidential debate.

In an ad for the Clinton campaign and on the talk show circuit, Machado recounted her experience with Trump, who repeatedly belittled and bullied her because she gained weight during her reign.

She told “Today’s” Natalie Morales that Trump ridiculed her with names like “Miss Piggy, “Miss Housekeeping” and “Miss Eating Machine.”

Trump’s misogyny and sexism are well documented.

In a new report, former employees have sworn under oath that the 70-year-old GOP candidate pressured managers at his Trump National Golf Club in Rancho Palos Verdes to hire young, thin women in the restaurant and clubhouse.

He wanted those fired who didn’t fit the bill, regardless of experience, according to The Los Angeles Times.

Yet, instead of letting Machado fade with the news-cycle, Trump became obsessed with smearing her.

His right-wing minions, including Fox News commentators, went to work with a shamelessly concocted story, according to the latest media reports.

Machado, they claimed, was accused of driving the getaway car for Mexican drug lord following an attempted murder. She later had his baby and threatened to kill a Venezuelan judge.

And, she had a porn star past that included hard-core anal sex scenes, chimed in hard-right radio host Alex Jones.

Other sites, mostly low-flying tabloids, splashed the allegations around as if they were true.

Of course, none of the alleged events took place before she was crowned Miss Universe. She was only 19 at the time, and they had nothing to do with her story involving Trump.

Meanwhile, Trump appeared to go off-the rails in his zeal to smear her.

He claimed, once again, that he was the victim of some broader conspiracy involving Clinton and the media. He spent a sleepless night Tweeting about it at 3:30 in the morning.

Even, close ally Newt Gingrich said his actions were “conduct unbecoming a president.”

Then, the smear campaign began to unravel.

The incident in which she was alleged to be the get-away driver in an attempted murder took place in 1998, two years after her Miss Universe reign had ended.

Bu the accusation was made by another unsavory drug dealer. A Venezuelan judge ruled that the evidence was insufficient to arrest her. There is no evidence that she threatened to kill the judge.

As for her porn-star past, it doesn’t exist.

Trump’s minions unearthed videos and claimed they showed Machado engaged in hard-core porn.

The woman in the clip was even identified as Machado on one porn site. But claiming look-a-likes are celebrities is a common ruse in the porn industry.

As it turns out, the video clips are from a 2004 porn movie “Apprentass 4.”

The woman in the videos is known as Angel Dark, according to The Daily Beast and fact-checking Web site snopes.

For her part, Machado has denied ever doing hard-core porn, although she did appear nude in Playboy. She also appeared on a risque Venezuelan reality television show having sex with a man under covers. It did not show any nudity.

Trump, incidentally, had a cameo role in a Playboy soft-core porn movie in 2000, and appeared on the magazine’s cover.

The movie,”Playboy Video Centerfold 2000,” features naked women in various sexual positions, touching themselves and rubbing honey all over their bodies.

His third wife Melania–and possible First Lady–has appeared in full-frontal nude and lesbian-themed nude photo spreads in European magazines.

As for the father of her baby, Machado told a Venezuelan news outlet that Mexican businessman Rafael Hernández was the father, not Jose Gerardo Alvarez, who was arrested for drug trafficking in 2010–again well after her Miss Universe reign.

In an appearance on CNN with Anderson Cooper, she acknowledged she had a past.

“Of course, everybody has a past. I’m not a saint girl. But that is not the point now,” she said.

But it’s not the past that Trump and hard-right commentators have tried to pin on her.

What’s odd is that the GOP candidate has tried to deny and obfuscate facts when it comes his own past shady business dealings.

Trump, according to reports, has frequently done business with Mafia figures in the construction industry and a new report charges that he violated U.S. sanctions against Cuba to curry favor with Fidel Castro during a secret business trip by his associates to the Communist nation.

In another irony, Trump’s obsession with the beauty queen has torpedoed his own campaign. His advisors have been desperately trying to get him back on point.

His disregard of facts, smear tactics and vindictiveness, reveal a dark side to his personality that raise grave questions about his fitness to be president.
