Natalie Portman distills the essence of former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy in a new trailer for “Jackie.” The movie captures the haunting hours following President John F. Kennedy’s assassination and the birth of “Camelot,” when myth overtook reality and a legend was born.

The Oscar winner is supported by Greta Gerwig, Peter Sarsgaard, Max Casella, Beth Grant, Billy Crudup, Richard E. Grant and John Hurt.

Pablo Larraín directed the movie and the new trailer suggests he’s going for much more than another rehashing of the oft told Jackie Kennedy saga.

Some 15 actresses have played the role in films dating back decades to the 1963 assassination. Certainly Katie Holmes, who’s now starred in three films, bears the most striking resemblance to her.

But Portman appears to deliver a more in-depth character study of a woman who was wrenched by tragedy, yet also understood her duty to her husband, the nation and his legacy as president.

The film screened at the Toronto Film Festival, and has received an astounding 95 percent rating among 22 critics who have reviewed it, according to rottentomatoes, which tracks reviews.

“Eclipsing her work in ‘Black Swan,” Portman flutters like a sail in a brisk wind. She is scattered, tense, wrecked and compellingly defiant in the face of those who would have her act a certain way,” wrote Joshua Rothkopf of TimeOut.

Even the trades are on board. Both Variety and The Hollywood Reporter give it a thumb’s up.

“Extraordinary in its piercing intimacy and lacerating in its sorrow,” wrote the Hollywood Reporter’s David Rooney.
