Ryan Gosling takes over the beat from Harrison Ford in the first look at “Blade Runner 2049,” the sequel to the 1982 neo-noir science fiction classic. The new trailer has the same gritty look but can it top the original?

Despite all the hype about the original and its cult status, the film only grossed $32.8 million with apparently no foreign distribution.

Critics were initially mixed about the picture, but praise for the film grew over time. Its visuals influenced the look for sci-fi films leading up to present day films like the “Batman” trilogy.

Gosling plays LAPD Officer K, a member of the special force that “retires” human-like “replicates.” He’s joined by Ford, who reprises his role as Rick Deckard.

Ana de Armas, Jared Leto, Sylvia Hoeks, Robin Wright, Mackenzie Davis, Carla Juri, Lennie James and Dave Bautista round out the cast.

The sequel is set 35 years after the original. Officer discovers a dark secret that threatens humanity. He seeks out Deckard, who went into hiding at the end of the last film.

The look and feel of the film seems to be the same. “Arrival” director Denis Villeneuve helms the picture and cinematographer Roger Deakins gives it the look. One thing is certain, the sequel has a lot bigger budget to work with.

But that was some of the appeal of the original. It had the look and feel of a low-budget cinema noir film. Maybe CGI has really advanced that much since 1982.

Check out the trailer below. The movie opens Oct. 6.
