“Transformers: The Last Knight” goes where no other film in the franchise has gone before… into its back story. A new international trailer lays out the origins of the transformers and not surprisingly it begins during a forgotten time.

Mark Wahlberg reprises his role from 2014’s “Transformers: Age of Extinction” along with Stanley Tucci as the former head of K.S.I.

Josh Duhamel, Tyrese Gibson and John Turturro also return from the first three movies. Sir Anthony Hopkins and Laura Haddock are newcomers.

Whalberg’s character, Cade Yeager travels to jolly old England where he meets Sir Edmund Burton (Hopkins), an astronomer and historian who knows the Transformers’ history on Earth.

Yeager teams up with Vivian Wembley (Haddock), an Oxford professor to uncover the secrets of the past and used them to save earth.

And, just in time. With the demise of Optimus Prime, the Transformers have set out to destroy the human race.

“There comes a moment in everyone’s life when we are called upon to make a difference. In Transformers: The Last Knight, the hunted will become heroes. Heroes will become villains. Only one world will survive: theirs, or ours,” according to the movie’s synopsis.

Director Michael Bay, who’s helmed the four previous movies, says this movie will be the last in the series. Kudos to him for finally making an attempt at a plot.

The previous movies are best known for their non-stop action, high-power CGI and fetching eye-candy. That part first went to Megan Fox. British model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley later replaced her.

Haddock, 31, provides the eye-candy in this film, but at least she’s a veteran actress. She’s appeared in both “Guardians of the Galaxy” movies and numerous television shows, including “Da Vinci’s Demons.”
