top gun 2 confirmed by tom cruise tom gun maverick

Tom Cruise confirmed he will begin filming Top Gun 2 next year.

Tom Cruise just confirmed that he will begin shooting Top Gun 2 in 2018.

That’s good news for fans of the hit 1986 film Top Gun, which has grossed more than $356.8 million to date.

Cruise will reprise his role as naval aviator Lieutenant Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in the sequel, which will be called “Top Gun: Maverick.”

“It’s true. It’s true,” Tom told Australian TV show, Sunrise (see video). “I’m going to start filming it probably in the next year. It’s happening, it’s definitely happening.”

There had been rumors of a Top Gun sequel since last year, when Cruise revealed he was in talks with Top Gun producer Jerry Bruckheimer and co-star Val Kilmer (who played “Iceman”).

In January 2016, Bruckheimer tweeted a photo of himself with Cruise, writing:

“Just got back from a weekend in New Orleans to see my old friend @TomCruise and discuss a little Top Gun 2.”

Tom Cruise, who’s currently promoting his latest film, “The Mummy,” is also shooting “Mission Impossible 6,” which will be released in 2018.

Top Gun was corny but entertaining, and spawned many memorial lines and hit tracks, including “Take My Breath Away” by the new-wave American band Berlin.

In 1987, the “Top Gun Anthem,” composed by Harold Faltermeyer, won a Grammy Award for best pop instrumental performance.
