Jennifer Lawrence plays a femme fatale Russian spy in a new trailer for the upcoming movie “Red Sparrow.” Russia is back to being the Evil Empire in Hollywood movies now that the Kremlin is under investigation for hacking the U.S. election to boost Donald Trump.
During the long-running Cold War, Russia was typecast as the evil empire in everything from James Bond movies to “Dr. Strangelove.”
With the fall of the old Soviet Union and the collapse of Communism in 1991, it was no longer politically correct to single out Russia, a putative ally, as a movie villian.
But the pendulum has swung back. Russian President Vladimir Putin has been accused of launching a massive cyber attack to influence the U.S. presidential election in favor of Trump.
The President is under investigation for collusion, and the spy game is hot again.
“Red Sparrow” is likely the first of a slew of spy movies that once again portray Russia as an enemy of the United States.
Lawrence plays Dominika Egorova a Russian soldier who joins a legion of fetching women trained to use her sexuality to seduce high-ranking government officials, or if necessary, murder them.
But who knew that Dominika would fall for a CIA agent played by Joel Edgerton? She considers becoming a double agent. Does love conquer all?
The spy thriller is directed by Francis Lawrence, based on the book of the same name, written by Jason Matthews.
You’ll have to wait until the movie arrives next year. In the meantime, check out the new trailer.
