Donald Trump makes the ultimate sacrifice, he skips the back nine at his New Jersey golf club, to address the Puerto Rican crisis in the wake of hurricane Maria in a hilarious cold open for “Saturday Night Live’s” debut show.
Trump, of course, was played by Alec Baldwin, whose impersonations of the president have become part of pop culture lore.
The president, as perfidious as ever, takes a phone call from San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz.
“Sometimes when you’re president, you have to make sacrifices,” Trump says. “So I skipped the back nine.”
She reminds the president about San Juan’s dire straights. He reminds her that Puerto Rico is an island, surrounded by water.
He assures her that federal aid will be there in a couple of days. She says they need help now.
Trump reminds Cruz that Puerto Rico should have “paid your bills,” a reference to the island’s debt, which has been an issue in the news lately.
He also reminds her that Puerto Rico is an “island in the water” and he has to “put America first.”
Someone apparently forgot to tell Trump that Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory and it’s residents are U.S. citizens.
After a long pregnant pause, Trump says he knows, but everybody else may not know.
Baldwin’s Trump also gets a visit from obsequious Attorney General Jeff Sessions, played by Kate McKinnon. “Please don’t tweet me,” he begs.
Obviously, “Saturday Night Live,” has no intention of going easy on the president in the new season. How could they? With all the material Trump is providing, they can’t ignore him.
