Magician David Copperfield was all for the #MeToo Movement– until he was outed, that is for allegedly sexually assaulting a woman. He says the charges are a “heinous and fabricated” illusion. Don’t expect to see it in his Vegas act.

Model Brittney Lewis charged that Copperfield drugged and sexually assaulted her in 1988 when she was 17 years old.

The incident allegedly occurred during a modelling competition in Japan, where he was a judge, she said in an interview with TheWrap.

That quickly changed Copperfield’s opinion about the #MeToo Movement, created to encourage women to speak out about being sexually assaulted.

In a series of Tweets, the 61-year-old illusionist, real name David Seth Kotkin, said the movement is “crucial and long overdue.”

Then added: “Imagine what it’s like, believing in the movement, and having also been falsely accused publicly in the past.”

“To have your life and your family’s life turned upside down,” he continued.

In a separate incident, Copperfield said he endured hundreds of tabloid stories about a similar false claim. The FBI was called in to investigate and found his accuser had also made the same claims against another man.

“The proof was on tape. The accuser was arrested and charged,” he wrote.

“I’ve lived with years of news reports about me being accused of fabricated, heinous acts, with few telling the story of the accuser getting arrested, and my innocence, ” he said.

“Knowing that false accusers can negatively impact the believability of others and are a true disservice to those who have been victims of sexual misconduct, I didn’t draw attention to it.”

He urged people not to “rush to judgment” this time around.

Lewis claims soon after the event, Coppefield invited her to one of his shows in California. She agreed, and he also took her shopping.

After the show, she alleges they went to the hotel bar where they were staying in separate rooms. She had barely touched her drink when she claims she saw him pouring something into her beverage.

“I asked, ‘What are you doing?’ and he said, ‘Oh, I’m just sharing,'” she claims he replied.

Lewis says she had a few sips and blacked out, but vaguely recalled him being on top of her in her room.

“I remember my clothes being taken off,” she recounted.

“He was kissing my face and then I remember him starting to go down on my body with his face, and then, as soon as he started going down, I just completely blacked out,” she added.

The next morning, Copperfield assured her: “I didn’t enter you.”

But talk about attention to detail–and potential legal liability–Copperfield allegedly made her sign a letter saying she was OK..

What a guy.

He’s had a Vegas act for years at the David Copperfield Theatre in the MGM Grand hotel and casino.

Copperfield, who once dated model Claudia Schiffer, is known for dramatic illusions, including levitating over the Grand Canyon and making the Statue of Liberty disappear.
