Stephen Colbert proved once again that late night comedians are one of the few sources of sanity in today’s culture. The talk show host spelled out the future of gun control and it begins and ends with the kids.

“I hope these kids don’t give up, because this is their lives and their future,” Colbert said. “Someone else may be in power, but this country belongs to them.”

The late-night comedian was responding to the latest mass shooting at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla. Seventeen students died and dozens were wounded.

Like every other mass shooting, the perp in this case used a military style assault rifle with a high-capacity magazine.

Colbert was off the air when the shooting occurred, but he wasted no time on his return to address the issue.

He also a chilling warning to lawmakers. The rapid rise of the #MeToo movement is a case study how quickly the mood of the country can change.

“This is an election year,” Colbert said. “So if you want to see change, you have to go to the polls and tell the people who will not protect you that their time is up.”

Jimmy Kimmel and John Oliver have made similar pleas. Last night James Corden also added his voice.
