Kim Kadashian posed for the first time with baby Chicago West in a photo released over social media today (Feb. 26). The baby has a considerably lighter skin compared with a photo of her in natural light in the arms of half-sister Kylie Jenner. What gives?

In the newly released photo, Kim and the baby, born last month to a surrogate, have the exact same skin color. It’s several shades lighter than Chicago’s previous photo with Kyle and way lighter than dad Kanye West.

The “Keeping Up With The Kardashians” star added a filter with pink round ears and a white nose. She captioned the image, “Baby Chicago.”

“Totally photoshopped a baby. Pathetic. I swear there is mascara on her too. Poor poor child,” wrote one critic.

Kim is the mother, with Kanye, of daughter North, 4, and son Saint, 2. Both are natural-born. The reality-television star’s skin tone, and that of her children, have been controversial ever since North’s birth.

Last August, Kim was accused of darkening her face for an Interview magazine photo shoot to match the darker skin tone of daughter North. She is half African-American as are Saint and Chicago.

The photos caused a social media uproar.

“Instead of using this as an avenue to show that we r racially diverse but still one, they darkened Kim’s complexion to match her daughter’s,” wrote one African-American critic on Twitter.

The Interview article called her America’s “New First Lady” and portrayed her as former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy.

“Pretty sure blackface is racist even if you’re married to one… And posing like a Kennedy? #WeAllRememberYourPorno,” another critic Tweeted.

Kim caused another uproar in 2013 when social media critics charged that baby North’s eyebrows had been filled in and waxed to remove a uni-brow before she was photographed.

Kim’s mother Kris Jenner fueled speculation after she announced that the baby was light-skinned with straight hair like Kim as soon as she was born.

Kim’s baby looked lighter skinned than in two previous photos taken shortly after her birth. Now, she appears to be much darker.

Although Chi, as the new baby is called, was carried by a surrogate, Kim said the surrogate was implanted with her egg fertilized by Kanye’s sperm.

“Our baby is biologically mine and Kanye’s. You can either choose someone that you know or you can go through an agency, like Kanye and I did,” she said.

Skin color is a sensitive issue in the African-American community. A number of black celebrities have been accused of bleaching their skin to appear lighter. Others have admitted to it.
