Sean Hannity, the sanctimonious conspiracy mongerer and all-round Donald Trump sycophant on Fox News, had a secret. That is, until a court judge forced Trump lawyer and fixer Michael Cohen to reveal that Hannity was Cohen’s mystery client. Late night was, understandably, apoplectic.
Stephen Colbert, The Daily Show’s Trevor Noah and Jimmy Kimmel all tackled the controversy in their late-night monologues.
Cohen, you may recall, paid porn star Stormy Daniels, aka Stephanie Clifford, $130,000 through a sketchy company on the eve of the 2016 election. In exchange, she agreed stay silent about her 2006 affair with Trump. At the time, he was married to First Lady Melania Trump.
Cohen also had his finger in the American Media deal to pay Playboy playmate Karen McDougal $150,000 in a “catch and kill” scheme to keep her from going public with details about her 10-month affair with Trump around the same time.
Trump’s fixer surfaced in yet another payoff scheme. This one involved a $1.6 million non-disclosure agreement between another Playboy playmate and Trump pal Elliott Broidy, a deputy finance chairman of the Republican National Committee.
Then, all of a sudden, Hannity surfaced as a third Cohen client. That raised questions: Why?
“This is craaazy,” said Colbert. “Cohan only has two other clients and all he does for them is pay off mistresses. Which raises the obvious question: Who did Sean Hannity have sex with?”
“Now, we don’t know and I can’t prove this, but I think it’s that football he’s always holding,” Colbert deadpanned.
But Hannity’s sexual tastes are beside the point, he continued.
“As I said, we don’t know and may never know, but it doesn’t matter what Cohen was doing for him. What does matter is that Sean Hannity is out there every day, every night, defending Trump and Michael Cohen,” he asserted.
The idea that Hannity was defending Trump’s lawyer without disclosing that he was also his lawyer is “crazy,” he said. “That’s a big detail to leave out Sean.”
Noah ask his audience to “think about how unethical this is for a moment. ” You know, with Cohen under federal investigation and all.
“Hannity has been reporting on this Michael Cohen story from the beginning, from the beginning, but he conveniently never mentioned that Cohen was his guy, which even for Sean Hannity is pretty shady,” Noah said. “I mean, even Instagram models have higher standards.”
“Once you know Hannity has personal skin in the game like with Cohen, it’s fun to go back and see everything he said about the FBI raid,” Noah added. “Because he wasn’t just mad, he was scared.”
For Kimmel, the disclosure must have been sweet revenge. He’s been feuding with Hannity over a joke he told about Melania Trump.
“Shockingly, that client turned out to be my pal Sean Hannity of Fox News… isn’t that interesting that he would need advice from Michael Cohen,” he said.
Hannity, he noted, was Tweeting furiously to add his spin to the controversy.
