Scarlett Johansson and Canadian husband Ryan Reynolds, two of Hollywood’s hottest stars, have ended their marriage of two years. Apparently the decision was mutual.

The Internet erupted with the rumor this afternoon (Dec. 14), only 11 days before Christmas, and the couple quickly confirmed their break up in a statement.

“After long and careful consideration on both our parts, we’ve decided to end our marriage,” the statement said.

“We entered our relationship with love and it’s with love and kindness we leave it. While privacy isn’t expected, it’s certainly appreciated.”

Gossip web site TMZ was out front with the report along with US weekly, which reported that the actual split occurred two weeks ago.

“They are being very civil about it,” a source told the magazine.

In the end, it seemed the marriage was befallen by the typical problems that beset Hollywood power couples. Distance and time apart while each pursued their own skyrocketing careers, led to disaffection.

The 34-year-old Vancouver-born hunk will star in one of the most buzzed about films of 2011, “The Green Lantern.”

Johansson has also been crazy busy appearing in such films as “Iron Man 2.”

Scarlett reportedly has been “unhappy for a while,” and ended the marriage, according to reports.

The couple was known for maintaining their privacy when they started dating in 2007, and a year later they got married in a super-secret ceremony at a remote British Columbia resort.

“I’m a little more guarded, I think,” Reynolds said of his marriage in GQ’s October issue.

“I’m a little bit more wary of having my relationship turning into a soap opera. I’ve just unilaterally not addressed it. That’s kind of been the fail-safe for me,” he said.

They rarely appeared in public together, although Scarlett turned out to cheer Reynolds on when he ran in the New York Marathon in 2008.

In March, Scarlett and Ryan appeared together on “Saturday Night Live,” when Ryan hosted the show.

Scarlett gushed about married life to InStyle, earlier this year, but seemed to be talking about what marriage should be rather than what hers was.

“I mean, you’re married and suddenly you have your own family,” she said. “There’s a nice comfort in that. That part of your life is certain, in a way. You’ve got your home in that other person.”

Johansson was recently named GQ magazine’s babe of the year, while Reynolds was anointed People’s “Sexiest Man Alive” in November.

By then, possibly, the marriage was already over.
