Joe Jonas Ashley GreeneJoe Jonas’ controversial pledge in 2008 to remain a virgin until he married, symbolized by a purity ring, now appears to have been what critics said it was all along — a sad publicity stunt.

Joe, 21, along with brothers Nick and Kevin, took the pledge along with Disney stars like Selena Gomez and Miley Cyrus.

At the time, Joe said he and his brothers made “promises to ourselves and to God that we’ll stay pure till marriage.”

The move was controversial. Not only hard was it hard to believe, but it also created unrealistic expectations for teens and young adults that may have prevented them from exploring other methods to avoid teen pregnancy.

Abstinence, long advocated by political conservatives, has been widely discredited as an effective birth control method.

The Jonas brothers and other teen stars not only played into the debate, but burnished their own images as well.

UK comedian Russell Brand chided the trio for their purity rings during the MTV Video Music Awards and doubted they would refrain from sex before they married.

He later apologized for his remarks. Seems the Jonas Brothers are the ones who need to apologize now.

Greene and Jonas began dating in July and not long afterward, the purity ring vanished from Joe’s finger.

The latest reports confirm that Jonas is now shacking up with Greene at her West Hollywood apartment.

It seems highly unlikely they are abstaining from sex when they are sleeping under the same roof.

Kevin just celebrated his one year anniversary with wife Danielle this week and may be pushing Joe to take the plunge now that he is living in “sin.”

Joe was spotted browsing up-scale jewelry story David Yurman in Beverly Hills yesterday (Dec. 20), and may be taking his brother’s advice.

The musician walked out of the store with his assistant carrying what appeared to be purchases.

Rumors have swirled for several weeks that he is on the verge of proposing to Greene, but as yet there has been no confirmation.

In the meantime, Joe should come clean about his so-called purity pledge.
