Call Paula Abdul almost anything but stupid. But that’s how the former “American Idol” judge was widely perceived by viewers because of her sometimes loopy behavior on the show.

Abdul says it’s the most annoying perception people have about her, she told CBS’s Julie Chen in an interview that will air on CBS Sunday Morning (Jan. 2).

“I AM intelligent, I AM,” Abdul, 48, told Chen in a preview of the show on CBS’s Web site.

Abul says she’s naturally good natured and goofy and her light-hearted behavior was misinterpreted by the audience, with no help from judge Simon Cowell.

She also adamantly denied having a drug or alcohol problem.

“I’ve never had a drinking problem. Even though I’ve been in this business for quite some time. I’ve never physically been drunk in my life. I’ve never been drunk in my life. I don’t use recreational drugs. But, I am goofy.”

“But, people don’t give you enough credit for having a brain,” Chen said, according to the video.

“Having a brain, that’s a concept, yes, with Paula Abdul. I have a brain,” Abdul said.

Abdul was an “American Idol” judge for eight seasons. She quit the show last year in a contract dispute, and the show never fully recovered from her departure.

Her replacement, talk show host Ellen DeGeneres was just short of a disaster.

This year, American Idol has added Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez as judges. They join lone veteran Randy Jackson.

Cowell will be headlining his own music talent show on Fox.

Abdul is set to launch her on reality dance competition on CBS next week (Jan 4).
